Rising From The Ashes
That’s what happened on a calm Tuesday evening, around 7:00 pm on October 23, 2018, when as the sun was setting, the church was bathed in a rainbow, and minutes later, the 148-year-old First Baptist Church was struck by lightning!
We praise Jesus that our church community was kept safe. We are forever grateful to the many firefighters, police, and DPW personnel who did their jobs with excellence and the outpouring of support from the community.
The fire was all-consuming. The lightning struck the church steeple, which was undergoing repairs, the lightning rod couldn’t ground it, and flames ripped through the building, causing it to collapse on itself in utter destruction.
Years ago, a friend of the church painted a lovely picture of Jesus as the Risen Christ. As you entered the big red doors of the church, you were greeted by the portrait of Jesus with his arms outstretched in welcome, the blood from the nails on his palms still visible. When the flames engulfed the building, people said they saw Jesus in the flames that were fiercely burning the steeple.
Was Jesus in the flames?
Miraculously, this original painting of Jesus Christ was saved by a firefighter, undamaged except for a bit of smoke. Everything surrounding the portrait was totally destroyed.
We know that we serve a God who specializes in restoring brokenness and who can bring beauty even from ashes. As a church family, we have persevered for the last 2+ years with trust, hope, and gratitude. Our faith in the Lord has sustained us, and by His grace, we will celebrate the rebirth of a beautiful new church building, all for the glory of God!
We are excited to finalize the design plans for the new church this spring. Once we’ve received all approvals, we’ll share the plans and good news with our neighbors, the broader church community, and friends yet to be known from around the world!
